Tasmania beat all other state sides in 1948 except West Australia, who beat them in the final. "He lived the first seven years of his life at Nala, when the family moved to the house Belle Vue in Sorell in 1941. He attended the Sorell State school for five years, from 1941 to 1946. There is a photo of him playing as No. 1 ruckman in the schoolboy competition in Brisbane in 1948 when he was 14. He even played in the tough local football competitions as well at this tender age. He was a pupil at the Hobart High School during 1947 and 1948. He managed to leave school at the age of 14 to start work at the Tasmanian Government Film Unit in Hobart as an office boy when he also left Sorell and took up lodgings in Bellerive in 1948. Not sure about cricket, but he certainly played football for Sorell as a 14-year-old schoolboy."
